:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jerry -- Who killed the toxicologists? : This is a first novel by this husband-and-wife author pair, based upon a total revision of an earlier book, Poisonous Science, by HF himself. This version of the story is much improved. The addition of AF to the author team seems to have improved the depth of the characters and the naturalness of the dialogue, as well as several other nuances of writing and style. The plot is good and the science integral to the plot is accurate and an interesting background for the story. Two investigators, one a former pathologist, now an FBI agent based in Washington DC, and the other a police detective from Gaithersburg, MD, a suburb of Washington DC, have to solve the mysterious deaths of several apparently totally unrelated victims. The pair take a linear approach to solving the case, with the reader looking over their shoulders every step of the way. A good whodunit, a dash of romance, and a good read for that weekend when you just want to curl up with a good book and not think too much about the real world. It combines the genre of lighthearted murder mystery, with the inner workings of academics, delving deeply into the underbelly of the grant review process, but in a witty way, that had me chuckling from the first page. Not far from the surface is a critique of how millions of dollars are doled out, showing how the peer review process is often corrupted by scientists for their own gain. The book dramatizes the frustration of those at the receiving end of unfair rejections. It is a highly entertaining fantasy of how a mentally unstable scientist might react to such a real or perceived injustice. The authors make good use of their expertise in biochemistry, adding an air of authenticity to the villain's dastardly deeds. This is juxtaposed with a romance woven naturally into the story, that gives extra depth to the characters and amusing and often touching dynamics between them. A highly enjoyable read! Lots of info you never knew keeps on coming. Front of has a list of characters so the reader can keep track. A fun romance threads it’s way through the story. It deliciously treats us to the bad-boy and bad-girl antics of those that do science and those that administer scientific funding, including the NIH and its controversial system of study sections.
